Born with supersonic speed and sought after for his unique gift, a hedgehog-like alien named Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is forced to
leave his homeworld and go into hiding on Earth. After ten years of living in the forest near a small Montana town, Sonic
inadvertently unleashes an energy surge causing a temporary global blackout. In response, the U.S. government enlists the help
of ingenious scientist (and egotistical maniac) Doctor Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to track down and study the source of the
blackout. With the help of local sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter), the hedgehog
hero must make his way across the country to keep his power out of the wrong hands.
Initially scheduled for a fall premiere, Sonic the Hedgehog was pushed back to February in order to redesign Sonic due to immense
backlash over the protagonist's original design. The studio, however, pulled through and deliver a movie that left me satisfied. Jim
Carrey's take on the classic video game villain Dr. Robotnik was different but hilariously entertaining. While at times the plot seemed
weak, due keep in mind that the film was intended for a younger audience; but for older teens and adults, Sonic has no shortage of
comedic moments that make the film a success.
